Individualized Writing & Communication Coaching

12 Weeks of Private 1:1 Coaching | Grades 5–12

Helping students organize their thoughts, express their ideas clearly, and communicate with greater confidence—in writing and in conversation.

Some students know what they want to say but struggle to communicate it clearly.

Their writing may jump from idea to idea, leave out important information, or stop short of fully explaining what they mean. When speaking, they may have difficulty organizing their thoughts, explaining themselves completely, or communicating with confidence.

Individualized Writing & Communication Coaching helps students strengthen the skills underneath both.

Rather than following a one-size-fits-all curriculum, each student's coaching is built around their individual strengths, challenges, and communication goals.

Meet Your Coach

Hi, I’m Jahci Joy!

I’m a Writing & Communications Coach, educator, and curriculum developer with experience teaching and supporting students across multiple grade levels and learning environments.

My approach goes beyond correcting grammar or telling students to “add more detail.” I help students understand how to organize their thinking, develop their ideas, and communicate what they mean in a way others can understand.

Through individualized instruction, I help students strengthen the writing and communication skills they can carry into the classroom, presentations, conversations, and eventually college and their careers.

My goal is simple: help students become clearer thinkers, stronger writers, and more confident communicators.

What We Work On

Areas of instruction are determined by the student's initial assessment and may include:

  • Organizing thoughts before writing or speaking
  • Identifying the main idea and most important information
  • Developing and elaborating on ideas
  • Explaining reasoning clearly
  • Creating logical connections between ideas
  • Determining what a reader or listener needs to understand
  • Expressing complete thoughts
  • Strengthening written clarity and organization
  • Organizing verbal responses
  • Speaking and presentation skills
  • Building confidence communicating ideas
  • Applying communication strategies independently

The goal isn't simply to improve one assignment, essay, or presentation.

Students learn strategies they can continue using across classes, assignments, conversations, presentations, and other situations where they need to communicate what they're thinking.

How the Program Works

  • 1. Assess

We begin by establishing a baseline of the student's written and verbal communication skills.

  • 2. Identify

I identify the specific skills creating the greatest barriers to clear communication and develop an individualized coaching plan.

  • 3. Teach

The student receives direct instruction in the strategies they need to organize, develop, and communicate their ideas.

  • 4. Practice

We practice those skills through guided writing and speaking activities with individualized feedback and support.

  • 5. Apply

Students begin applying their strategies to increasingly independent academic and real-world communication.

  • 6. Reassess

At the end of the program, we evaluate growth, document progress, and identify next steps for continued development.

Questions don't always happen during a scheduled session.

During the program, families have a way to communicate questions related to the student's coaching, assignments, practice, and application of the strategies we're developing.

This allows the work we do together to connect more naturally to what the student encounters between sessions.

  • Is This a Good Fit for Your Child?

Individualized Writing & Communication Coaching may be a good fit for students who:

    • Know what they want to say but struggle to put it into words
    • Leave important information out when writing
    • Have ideas but struggle to organize them
    • Become stuck when trying to explain something
    • Have difficulty elaborating on their thoughts
    • Struggle to explain their reasoning clearly
    • Need frequent prompting to provide more information
    • Lack confidence expressing themselves verbally
    • Need help organizing what they want to say before speaking
    • Want to become stronger, clearer, and more confident communicators
  • This Program May Not Be a Good Fit for Your Child If:

Individualized Writing & Communication Coaching may not be the right fit if your student:

    • Primarily needs help with handwriting, spelling, or basic grammar rather than developing and communicating ideas
    • Is looking primarily for homework completion or traditional subject-area tutoring
    • Needs intensive reading remediation or foundational decoding instruction
    • Needs diagnosis or treatment for a speech, language, or fluency disorder
    • Needs specialized therapeutic support that falls within the scope of a speech-language pathologist or another licensed provider
    • Requires support for a learning need that would be better addressed through specialized clinical or therapeutic services
    • Is not currently able or willing to participate in individualized instruction and guided practice
    • Is looking for a quick fix rather than developing communication skills through consistent practice and application

Not sure if your student is a fit? That’s exactly what the initial consultation is for. We’ll talk about what you’re noticing, what you’d like to see improve, and whether this program is the appropriate type of support for your student.

What Your Child is Working Towards

By the end of the program, the goal is for your student to have stronger strategies for:

Thinking → Organizing → Explaining → Communicating

Rather than constantly relying on someone else to tell them what to add, what to say, or how to organize their ideas, students begin developing a process they can use independently.

Those skills can transfer into:

  • Essays and written assignments
  • Short-answer responses
  • Classroom discussions
  • Presentations
  • Explaining academic reasoning
  • Conversations with adults
  • Future interviews
  • Other situations where clear communication matters
